Important Treatment Considerations for Patients
Safety Considerations
Juvederm Important Information – Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane are FDA-approved, effective and safe dermal fillers. Complications are rare, however, they are possible. With any cosmetic treatment, safety is the first concern. As always, it’s important to consult with your doctor before deciding on a wrinkle treatment. Because JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is a non-surgical, in-office treatment, most patients experience minimal recovery and little to no downtime.
Facial Fillers are indicated for injection into the mid-to-deep dermis for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (such as nasolabial folds) and is generally well tolerated. The advantage of Juvederm™ over other hyaluronic acid fillers is that it is a gel that provides a smoother, natural looking contour to the face and results are longer lasting than other types of dermal fillers. Being a natural product found in our tissues, it is eventually absorbed by the body. There is no recovery time and the rejuvenating effects show immediately.
Smoking affects blood circulation and may reduce the length of how long an injectable can last.
What are the Contraindications?
Juvederm Important Information – Inform your physician before treatment if you are using these types of substances or concerns in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications:
- Patients who are using substances that can prolong bleeding, such as Blood thinners, ibuprofen or aspirin, as with any injection, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
- If your Family Doctor approves – you can decrease your chance of bruising if you avoid aspirin-containing products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 7 to 10 days before the procedure.
- Should be used with caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy, or therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response, as there may be an increased risk of infection.
- Should not be used in patients with a history of allergies to lidocaine.
- If laser treatment, chemical peel or any other procedure based on an active dermal response is considered after treatment, there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
- The safety of patients with a history of excessive scarring (eg, hypertrophic scarring and keloid formations) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.
- For safety during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females, or in patients under 18 years has not been established.
Allergies
It carries little risk of allergic reaction because of the biocompatibility of hyaluronic acid. If you’re considering treatment, your healthcare professional should ask about your medical history to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel for facial wrinkles and folds should not be used in patients who have:
Should not be used in patients who have a history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins. Allergies to any active ingredients or inactive ingredients in the filler (See Medication Guide for a list of ingredients)
Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or history or presence of multiple severe allergies.
JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is generally well tolerated. Side effects such as an allergic reaction are rarely or never seen. Most side effects are mild to moderate in nature and Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally biocompatible, they are considered so safe and non-allergenic that no prior skin-testing is recommended or required. The Hyaluronans (Juvederm®, Juvederm® Ultra Plus, and Juvederm® XC) are fully compatible with the naturally occurring hyaluronans in the skin. However, some Collagen products require skin testing (Cosmoderm®) and (Zyderm®) others do not. Even Radiesse®, although not a natural constituent of the skin, requires no prior skin testing.
What are the Possible Side Effects?
The treated area may be slightly pink for one to two hours after injection. This typically settles down quickly with a light application of ice. Discomfort is brief but you may experience their duration lasting up to 7 days or less:
Temporary injection site – Slight redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, itching, bruising, discoloration, and short-term bleeding/bruising from the needle. Such bleeding/bruising is usually minimal and can be easily covered with make-up.
- It is important to consider or watch out for tiny bumps that may form under the skin. In very rare cases, those tiny bumps may last a long time but not usually. A bluish discoloration on the skin, known as the Tyndall effect, is possible.
- As with all injections, rash and infection are rare but a possible complication.
- Less common side effects include facial asymmetry, scarring and nerve damage
We stay on the side of caution, which means we recommend not overdoing it; you may instead decide to come back in 2 weeks to purchase an additional touch up (vial). Even though we have not observed any severe instances in anyone that we have treated because our trained staff knows exactly how to inject and what areas to avoid; we are still able to consult or help you if you are concerned with a result that you have received from another Aesthetic provider. You can be given a prescription, in some cases, to speed-up resolution.
Is there any chance of serious side effects?
Rarely, but if you think you’re having an allergic reaction or other unusual symptoms – get immediate medical attention! There are no reports of permanent side effects from filler treatments.
Fillers are a very safe, effective, and proven method for treating fine lines and wrinkles, especially when injected in the proper settings by a trained professional. Discontinuing treatments should reverse any side effects that may occur from treatment. In other words, most of the unwanted cosmetic risks are temporary and wear off as it wears off.
The safety and effectiveness of injectable gels for the treatment of the areas other than facial wrinkles and folds (such as lips) have not been established in controlled clinical studies.
