Introduction to Juvederm®, Restylane, Perlane, Sculptra, Radiesse and other
From the Doctors:
With age, skin loses elasticity, as we lose a significant amount of soft tissue, collagen and the fat appears to fall and facial muscles thin.
These factors combine to create the look we associate with the aging face. In addition, if we don’t replace facial volume, but just pull the skin and muscles tight, we end up with unusual lines on the face, may result in an aging look that is certainly inconsistent with an appearance of health or youthfulness!
How parentheses appear:
As you age, your skin changes. For example, it reduces production of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). Over time, the loss of HA in your skin results in facial wrinkles and folds, like those “parentheses” around your mouth, this can be combated with Juvederm XC.
Juvederm injectable gel replaces the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds. A breakthrough in HA dermal, fillers, Juvederm is the first smooth consistency HA gel and the only HA filler that’s FDA approved to last up to a year!
Thicker substances are best for deeper creases, recontouring areas like cheek hollows and lips. Thinner substances work better for fine lines and superficial wrinkles or thin-skinned areas around the eyelids or lip lines. Additionally, we offer non-hyaluronic acid dermal fillers such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®, which enhance facial volume and offer natural, long-lasting results.
Our skillful surgeons frequently work with all types of dermal fillers and will select the ideal dermal filler or combination of fillers to achieve your optimal results.
There are three specific types of Juvéderm dermal fillers. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is a higher linked concentration for areas that need more correction and volume such as in deeper folds and severe wrinkles. Juvéderm Ultra is specifically made for more delicate areas such as the lip augmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and folds.
JUVÉDERM® XC is manufactured using HYLACROSS™ technology, creating a smooth-consistency gel. It is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment; you get the smooth results you expect, with the improved comfort you want.
Juvederm Ultra XC is an injectable gel, 3D hyaluronic acid, with 0.3% Lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Also treats moderate lines around the lips and corners of the eyes, and those close to the surface of the skin.
Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is an injectable gel, 3D hyaluronic acid, with 0.3% Lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Ultra Plus is a thicker gel, that can smooth wrinkles between the nose and corner of the mouth, and around lips.
Juvederm Voluma XC is an injectable gel, 3D hyaluronic acid, with 0.3% Lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Juvederm 4 is the thickest gel, and works on the most noticeable folds and lines, and improves the contour of the face.
How is Filler injected?
It comes in a sterile vial. Juvederm has been used to treat a variety of cosmetic purposes, FDA-approved serum is administered via a few injections, using the smallest micro-needle available, directly into the area under your skin to fill creases.
This process will show results immediately after injection. By “Filling” in these areas of the face, thereby changing the appearance of “dynamic” wrinkles that are caused by repeated facial expressions. It can even go after wrinkles that are already present, at rest, known as “static wrinkles” which will not go away with just Botox. Additional procedures may be needed to improve those types of wrinkles such as the other options listed below.
What are the different treatment alternatives?
Other treatments for dermal soft tissue augmentation include Lip Enhancement or Lip Augmentation (Lip implants), bovine-based collagen and other hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Several new fillers have been introduced that provide for a greater variety of treatment options. Filling substances may include bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid gel, liquid silicone, fat removed from another part of your body (Fat Transfer) and polymer implants.
Other people who don’t want to avoid surgery, may consider Face-Lift or lip implants, which have a longer lasting effect. Dermal fillers offer the benefit of visible results.
How do I know whether I will benefit from Botox or a Filler for expression lines?
A combination can be used to completely get rid of the folds between the outer part of the nostrils, corners of the lips and fine lines above the lips, creating voluptuous lips. Liquid Facelift is when a small amount of Injectables is placed in specific areas around the face.
Botox and Fillers are used for different purposes. This will depend upon whether you want to treat Facial Expression Lines or Wrinkle Lines. Botox reduces the activity of the muscles that produce Facial Expression Lines. However, it may not significantly affect those wrinkles and furrows that have already developed and are present in the absence of active facial expression. Filler materials, such as Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm XC, and fat, treat this at-rest (Wrinkle Lines) by plumping up the skin. Although Fillers reduce the appearance of lines when there is no facial expression, the moment that you smile or frown, the lines reappear.
Some people benefit more from Botox than Fillers while others more from Fillers than Botox. However, many benefit from a combination of Botox and a Filler. During a consultation, it will be determined whether Botox, a Filler or a combination will provide the most benefit to you.
Effects of Juvederm versus Botox in older patients:
Botox has a more limited benefit in older patients when used alone. Patients in their 40’s, 50’s 60’s, 70’s and beyond can definitely benefit from Botox but other procedures may be necessary for the optimum smooth results. In the 40’s, a good skin care regimen combined with chemical peels like VI Peel as well as Fractionated CO2 laser can give the best results by preventing further wrinkles and reducing the ones already formed. Patients in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s or beyond often need additional surgery such as lower facelift, Brow lift or eyelid lift in addition to Botox and Lasers to get the smoothest results. Ignoring the skin for 50 years and expecting Botox to do magic is not realistic but can be a good start on the path towards a better more rejuvenated appearance.
How Restylane Works
Many patients have heard of Allergan’s Juvederm products, however, Restylane is an adequate alternative to Juvederm. They are both comprised of stabilized non-animal hyaluronic acid, which a natural substance found in the body. Both fillers are effective and safe, as they preserve the face’s natural shape. Hyaluronic acid binds to the body’s water and helps provide natural, long-lasting success. The fillers correct eye-bags fills nasolabial creases and plumps the lips. Results from Restylane last from 7 to 11 months while Juvederm lasts 7 to 10 months (smoking can cause earlier absorption).
Restylane® is designed to mimic your body’s natural hyaluronic acid and is used to add fullness to your lips and facial volume, diminishing the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Restylane Touch® (e.g. Hylaform®) is a safe choice for patients with allergies because the HA in Restylane® is fully biocompatible and is not animal-based.
Perlane® is associated with the Restylane® family of products and only differs from Restylane® in terms of gel size particles and depth of injection. Because Perlane’s® gel particles are larger than those in RestylanRadiesse® and Sculptra® are both non-hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers utilized to add global facial volume, particularly in the temples and cheeks, where most noticeable volume loss is observed.
They are frequently used in procedures such as: lip augmentation, nose sculpting, cheek contouring, filling in laugh lines, fat loss jawline contouring, chin shaping, and revitalizing the appearance of the hands.Although they have similar uses, Radiesse® is comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite (an organic substance found in human bone tissue), while Sculptra® is composed of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA). Radiesse® and Sculptra® stimulate your body’s collagen production; however, Radiesse also boosts facial volume on its own and offers more immediate visible results. Both fillers provide longer-lasting solutions than most of their predecessors – Sculptra® lasts up to two years (after the first series of injections) and Radiesse® lasts up to one year.
Resorbable Fillers – Resorbable fillers are made from natural or synthetic materials that are broken down and resorbed by the body over time.
The good news is that if you are not happy with the results, the material will eventually disappear. Of these, hyaluronic acid based fillers are the safest and most predictable, and the one that we use most often in our practice. Other commonly used resorbable fillers include human and bovine or cow collagen.
Nonresorbable Fillers – The non-resorbable class of fillers has synthetic components that do not get broken down by the body. They are considered permanent because the particles cannot be removed, or semi-permanent because the particles are suspended in a substance that gets absorbed in three to six months. They are considered permanent because some of the material cannot be removed after it has been injected. Examples of non-resorbable fillers include silicone and polyacrylamide gels.
How Radiesse Works
Radiesse is painless, fast and easy, with long-lasting results that instantly appear after injection. What makes Radiesse unique is that it is technically not a “filler” but is an implant. It is made of small microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, which serve as a baseboard underneath the skin, allowing the natural effects of aging to slow down. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a natural bone constituent, so Radiesse does not result in allergic reactions. The spheres are injected with a needle and it spreads through the targeted area, as your body’s natural collagen connect onto the spheres, creating a natural-looking appearance. Radiesse has been clinically proven to last at least 12 months! However, Radiesse is quite difficult to remove since there is no reversal medication that can be used at this time. The product dissolves over time but cannot be removed if the patient does not like the results. This product will help you on your beauty journey to restore confidence and rejuvenate your skin.
Belotero is the new generation cosmetic hyaluronic acid gel filler similar to Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm. It is manufactured to treat wrinkles and fine lines without bumps and lumps as it is designed to integrate into the facial tissue.
Structural Fat Grafting has recently gained popularity in restoring volume to an aging face. We are closer today than we have ever been in finding the “perfect” filler. While no filler is guaranteed to be permanent, fat may be the most promising. For some, your own fat, harvested from an area where you have some extra works out well. This does require “harvesting” the fat (a small procedure done under local anesthesia) and not being able to predict accurately how much of the fat will remain over time. The big plus is you are using your own, natural soft tissue filler. For deeper wrinkles, a combination of filler such as your own fat through our Fat Transplantation is often recommended to achieve a maximum improvement.
Additional options for the correction of wrinkles and facial folds include facial creams, Facial treatments such as chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, Ultrasound Therapy, Sublative and other laser skin surface treatments may be discussed with your Skincare professional.
As we age, the proteins in the lower layers of our skin begin to degrade. The result is skin that lacks youthful tone and plumpness and has many small wrinkles. While good moisturizers (ask your Body Beautiful technician for what’s best) can plump the skin somewhat, they have their limitations. Moisturizers just can’t add volume to the skin, and volume they add is limited to a shallow dermis layer.
