Sun and Age Spots
How it Works
How Photofacial Works | The Photofacial uses an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
How Photofacial Works – IPL is a device that is steadily passed over the skin’s surface and treatment areas. The light emits high-intensity wavelengths that reach deep within the skin’s layers to cause a structural breakdown of damaged cells; this promotes the healing process as the body rapidly removes the injured tissues and cells.
Photofacials give numerous advantages for damaged skin and can help you achieve a fresh, rejuvenated appearance. It’s commonly used to boost collagen, which fills in wrinkles and gives skin a smooth, youthful, even-toned appearance and reduces pores.

Sun’s radiation can account for 80% of changes in the skin and adds to the natural aging process, according to our genetics. Smoking, poor hydration (diuretics drinks like carbonated beverages), tanning beds can have the same effect. Though rays may feel wonderful they break down essential components, collagen, and elastin, that make up the healthy skin. Collagen and elastin proteins are found, below the epidermis, in the dermis layer of skin. Both bind with water, so hydrating the skin is important. Elastin keeps the skin flexible, firm, and keep it unwrinkled and smooth. Allowing the skin to bounce to its original position after repeated facial expressions. Collagen forms a healthy mesh to cushion and support the outermost layer, epidermis skin, to keep tiny wrinkles, sagging skin to form deep lines and folds. Different types of collagen change within the skin as we age. Think about how soft a baby’s skin feels or compare the back of your hand to the underside of your forearm.
How Photofacial Works, The Treatment Process | Traditional IPL
First, you will use a facial cleanser to clean and clear the face of makeup, lotions, and oils, and place special protective goggles over your eyes during treatment. The treatment provider will then pulse the laser over your skin. Each pulse will send a photoepilation or “healing power of light” beam through your skin. Although your eyes are closed and covered with goggles, you may still see a bright flash of light. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a sensation on the skin will tell you when the laser is being pulsed, targeting the pigment in the skin without damaging the surrounding tissue. Your technician will discuss post-procedure skin care agents and instructions.
Levulan treatments – will be applied 1 to 2 hours before the session, depending on the problem.
Follow instructions properly – Vital to avoid any light exposure, It is at this time that is most crucial:
Patients are to wear very covering type clothing (hat/scarf) and instructed to stay indoors for minimally 24 – 48 hours. You should return to normal activities within 2-5 days and makeup can be applied after the 2nd day.
In a quick, affordable 30-minute session, your skin rejuvenation and toning process are well underway! You may experience slight redness, but typically this goes away within 5 minutes, although some patients experience redness up to 24 hours. Crusting and scabbing may appear wherever there’s a dark spot; this will usually subside within 3-10 days. Avoid sun exposure as much as possible at least 2 weeks before but optimally 4 weeks and for approximately one week after. Between laser treatments, sun exposure is not recommended, so if you are receiving more than one photofacial, stay out of the sun as much as possible and use at least SPF 45 on your face at all times to reduce that chance of the pigmentation returning.
Laser treatments are done in a series every 4-6 weeks in for about 2-5 sessions, depending on each patient’s skin condition. You should start to gradually see results in the weeks following treatment, especially shrinking or fading after 1 or 2 sessions!
