Permanent Makeup Questions and Answers
Q: What is permanent makeup?
A: Permanent makeup is pigment placed under the skin (dermis) in a series of dots. These dots or lines are placed together to create the desired image.
Q: I’m anxious about letting anyone else design my makeup, especially if it is permanent. What if I don’t like the design or color after the procedure?
A: Your technician will assist you in determining design-work, it will look as you wish. She will take your facial shape into consideration, design a brow, eyeliner or lip liner that suits your facial features best. You approve design work before she proceeds with the procedure. This is YOUR face, YOUR procedure and it must meet YOUR expectations.
Q: What if eyebrow styles change?
A: Your eyebrow shape will be based on your own preferences in combination with the technician’s suggestions for a classic shape that will remain in style and will not be affected by fads or cosmetic surgery.
Q: What if eyeliner goes out of style?
A: It is exceptionally difficult to find a stage in history where the appearance of darker, thicker lashes was not fashionable. With the eyeliner or eyelash enhancement procedure your natural lash-line is enhanced for a fuller, beautiful, natural result. This procedure is also very popular for men with light colors or sparse eyelashes. It provides a wonderful eye definition. Thin, medium and wide top and bottom eyeliners are also very popular. However, when I do procedures, I performed a more conservative, natural look.
Q: What about people that have allergies?
A: Many people love Permanent makeup because it replaces the topical cosmetics they may be sensitive to. Contact lens wearers especially enjoy not having to worry about makeup becoming lodged under their lenses.
Q: I have heard that these procedures require multiple sessions. Why is that necessary?
A: It is necessary for several reasons. One is due to the condition of the skin. Each skin type is different. Some skin types are thicker and healthier and more pigment will be retained in one session. Also, fine details, additional color depth, or design adjustments are easily made after the initial healing is complete. A follow-up visit is usually scheduled, if only to meet and discuss the healed outcome of the procedure, and agree that no further work is necessary. However, discuss all these concerns with your technician. Typically it takes a total of at least 2, possibly 3 applications, 4 weeks apart to achieve the desired outcome.
Q: If this is permanent, why are future touch-ups necessary?
A: The major issues affecting the pristine appearance of your procedure is exposure to the sun, changing health conditions, medications, anti-aging products, and hormonal changes. At some point in time, usually, several years after your initial procedure, you will want to refresh the color. If you return to your original technician she should offer a good discount, otherwise starting over with a new, different technician, you can expect to pay regular price.
Q: I’m worried about the word “permanent”
A: Don’t be. Permanent makeup is a multi-session process. During the healing process, the first application can fade up to 40%-70%. If at that point you are dissatisfied with your permanent makeup (extremely rare), then no harm is done because much of the pigment (usually) will have flaked off – this is the way the body heals itself. If anything, most clients return requesting more color, a thicker line, etc. After each subsequent application 4 weeks apart, the area retains more color, giving you the beautiful final outcome.
Q: Is this considered a safe process?
A: Yes, it is a safe process conducted by a trained technician that follows the proper sanitation and sterilization requirements. The technician opens a sterilized tool and a manufactured sealed, sterilized needle at the beginning of the procedure. The used needle is placed in a disposable (Sharps) container after the procedure has been completed. In addition, all areas the client will come in contact with while at the office are sterilized. By conducting procedures in this manner, clients are assured that their health has been safeguarded to the highest standards. After leaving the office, it is then the client’s responsibility to care for the procedure in a manner that encourages normal healing.
Q: Will I be uncomfortable during the procedure?
A: Some people experience some discomfort during the procedure. This is described as a stinging or plucking sensation, which subsides as soon as the procedure is over. We have excellent topical anesthetics, which normally reduces discomfort to a minimum.
Q: How soon before I can resume normal activities?
A: For most people, usually the same day. Procedures normally produce a little swelling or trauma to the surrounding skin. As a result, you may resume normal activities, as long as they do not have an adverse effect on the healing process. For example, you wouldn’t want to introduce bacteria into the treated area by sweating while jogging. It is recommended you do not plan a special function the day of and up to 3 days after having your permanent makeup, only because it’s a new look and will be darker than the final outcome. Avoiding public pools, oceans or open bodies of water should also be avoided.
Q: Is there anything different from the way it takes on the lips versus the eyes?
A: There is DEFINITELY a difference! You might be a little swollen. Your lips will appear very red for about 4 to 5 days due to the wounded skin. You may eat as usual, but you will not want to let the food touch your lips. You may brush your teeth, but try not to get any paste on your lips. it may affect the outcome of your color (fading it). Teeth WHITENING is not recommended at all during the healing time. It is TRUE that Lasers can turn your lips black. You would have to let your technician KNOW you have permanent makeup there and to stay away from the borders of your lip.
Q: Is the downtime longer? What special precautions do I need to take?
A: You will NEED to take any cold sore medicine a few days in advance and a few days after your treatment to avoid an outbreak.
Q: Do I have to wait a while before eating or be careful when I brush my teeth?
A: Your mouth carries a lot of bacteria and germs in it. You will want to make sure that you don’t lick your lips during the healing time.
Q: I have another set of questions about the upper eyeliner. Is the upper harder to apply than the lower?
A: The upper liner is not “harder” to do, but poses a longer duration of treatment time the thicker you want it. *NOTE; the thicker you want the line, the more you are apt to swell MORE. it is NOT advised to do 2 different colored eyeliners at the same treatment day on the same eyelid. the colors will mix and blend together under the surface of your skin. For example, if you wanted a French eyeliner (black along the lashes and white above it, BOTH lines would heal a mottled gray.
Q: Does it take longer? Do you have to pull down on my eyelid?
A: You absolutely have to stretch the eyelid to achieve a straight line, to assure that the color is implanted properly, and for your protection!!!
Q: Do people find the upper more uncomfortable?
A: Most people find the upper eyeliner more uncomfortable INITIALLY because they usually want a thicker line. Once we get started with the procedure, the topical numbing solution helps, and it becomes much more tolerable!
Q: Anything else?
A: It is NOT recommended to get any work done on the INNER corner part of the eye well. the color will migrate and will look like a pool of blotchy color there rather than a nice, neat line.
