Overview, What is MicroNeedling?

Microneedling is also known as CIT or Collagen Induction Therapy, an FDA-approved treatment performed with an FDA-registered Class 2 technology Medical Device designed for professionals. Procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of Nano or 1-42 pins at a time (12 being most popular) via sterile single-use microneedle cartridges.

It is a simple technique using multiple micro needles to poke hundreds (if not thousands) of microscopic pinholes to stimulate the skin’s self-repair mechanism. This more natural healing process creates ”micro-injuries” or columns of coagulation which triggers new collagen synthesis to help erase the memory of what was once there, without risk of scarring. This is similar to our fractional and sublative laser treatments. All these procedures are normally completed within 30-40 minutes, depending on the required treatment and anatomical sites.

Intended Use

Treatment helps build collagen to minimize fine lines, wrinkles, tighten aging skin and to diminish hyperpigmentation. It can also be used to minimize enlarged pores, clogged pores, milia, calcium deposits and scars, including acne, surgical, stretch marks, burns and other traumas. Aiding in efficacy for topical skincare penetration, we use one or a combination of Hyaluronic Acid, Growth Factors, scar formulas and other serums.

When this treatment is combined with a laser Photofacial, it can result in the ultimate skin rejuvenation package for smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin!

Contraindications 

We will not go over skin with open wounds, raised moles, warts, eczema/psoriasis, sunburn, active bacteria (including acne), rashes, fungal, herpes or other skin infections. Notify us if you have a history of chronic diabetes, wound-healing deficiencies, hemorrhagic or hemostatic disorder, scleroderma, collagen vascular abnormalities, actinic keratosis (skin pre-cancers) and other conditions or patients on blood thinners or immunosuppressive therapy. If any ambiguity exists, it is recommended that patients seek their physicians or health practitioner’s permission before treatment. 

Precautions and Warnings

Please keep this in mind if you are prone this may trigger cold sores, have medication prior or on hand. Most common types include Retin-A, retinol, tretinoin for at least 5 days, No Accutane for 4 months prior to treatment. Precautions when determining treatment for those pregnant or nursing. Notify us of new or persistent keloid scars (can be ok if it’s a single, old or one-off scenario).

Side Effects

After the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed in appearance, similar to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatment.  Within 24-72 hours the skin will be completely healed (varying from patient to patient). After three days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place. You may still experience dryness at this time; this is completely normal.

Patient Consent

Although changes may occur after the first treatment, it usually requires a series of sessions to obtain full desired outcome. The procedure and side effects have been explained to me, including alternative methods, advantages and disadvantages. Though good results are expected, I understand results will vary, and the possibility of complications cannot be accurately anticipated; therefore, a guarantee cannot be implied as to the success or results of the treatment. I am aware that micro-needling treatments may not be permanent as natural degradation can occur over time. You will need to be patient with your body and allow for some time to reveal results. Critically looking in the mirror every day or all day will make seeing the subtle changes difficult. Cell turnover takes 28 days, so the full result of each treatment should be seen in 6 weeks. It is better to NOT LOOK for a while and keep focus on other areas of health! 

Pre-Treatment Care: (always use sunscreen) 

Wash face prior to treatment, should be no evidence of self-tanner, makeup, lotions, creams, etc. on the treatment area. Many patients prefer ultimate microdermabrasion exfoliation beforehand to completely open the pores and enhance the effects of numbing cream to aid comfort. 

Post-treatment Care:  Can vary based on area, tip depth and amount of passes.

WASH YOUR HANDS very often & DO NOT TOUCH the areas, especially after contacting doorknobs, light switches or other surfaces that germs reside. Change your pillowcase, do not rest the phone directly on your face, to avoid bacteria getting into the treated area. Avoid sun exposure for a week.

Day 1: You will experience mild to moderate redness and possibly some swelling, similar to sunburn. Mild bruising is rare but may occur. Try not to use ice, exercise or apply makeup for 24 hours after treatment because the skin’s channels are open. You can apply a clean washcloth with cool water if needed to help reduce warm sunburn-like sensation. Moisturize multiple times daily for the first few days. Do Not exfoliate skin for about a week after treatment. 

Day 2: Redness should slowly fade but you may start to notice some dryness on the skin. This is normal, keep applying hyaluronic acid, moisturizer and serums multiple times.

Day 3: Most redness should be gone. You should appear normal with makeup applied. May still have some dryness. Skins natural healing response may feel itchy as deeper layers heal, avoid scratching areas and apply more topicals.

Day 4: Skin should appear normal but slightly dry at this point with some minor swelling. This is an initial collagen-boosting benefit. Continue to moisturize as much as needed and always use sunscreen as a precaution which will help to protect your investment.
